gold elmleaf award

The Elmleaf Award

The Elmleaf award was created many years ago whilst on vacation with some of the Elmwood technorati (an elite power force known as “the bimbo’s,” of which I am proud to say, I am a member of). We were sitting on a porch drinking coffee, ok lets call it coffee, and talking trash. I was complaining about being burnt out, working on show after show, feeling over abused and under appreciated when Debbi Fleckenstein lightheartedly interjected, “Work? We're not working, we're having fun!” Self-righteous and self absorbed, I went off about the seriousness of the craft, levels of dedication, 60-hour weeks, and so on. Being the kindest gentlewoman you have ever meet, Debbi placated me with a smile and silently slipped away. A few hours later Champ Knect, another member of the clan, came to me tenderly suggesting that I owed Debbi an apology. When I questioned him from atop my soapbox, he turned it back to me with, “Do you have any idea of how much Debbi does for Elmwood?” As Champ cataloged her workload, I was shocked at what I didn’t know. I realized that not only did I owe her a huge apology, I owed her a heartfelt measure of thanks. Over the next months, I learned more about the volume of other unsung heroes that donate their energy to this special place and how to express our appreciation.

“Thank you, we appreciate and understand. We see how much you care and the work you do means something to us.” I chose the “leaf” motif because we function as individuals in branches of the tree. After making the first few presentations to people on my list, the board absorbed the process. The leaf developed a new look when David Vogel starting hand turning beautiful bases for it on his lathe. With a statement of love and appreciation, Jennie Marino
